How To Spend A Weekend in Boulder, CO – by Mark and Zoe Montabano

"Progressive. Fun. Natural. This city has always been a haven for health and fitness enthusiasts, and has produced many famous athletes and adventurers. There are more rocket scientists in this town per capita than anyplace else, too. These are some smart, healthy citizens!Boulder has transformed in the last few years, and it is becoming increasingly less of a “hippie town”…well, sort of. Let’s just say high-tech geeks are now the ones sporting beards and flip-flops these days. Of course there are new coffee shops, restaurants and green-businesses popping up all over town, but there’s also an entrepreneurial spirit growing here, with a fresh burst in growth in the tech industry. And nature lovers will never be bored in this place, either.To demonstrate Boulder’s unique blend of being a small city that loves it's local, unique places combined with it's love affair with modern technology, we “tweeted” the question “What’s your favorite (blank) in Boulder?”… or rather, “ What's ur fave about #Boulder? Tell me & incl. #myfavboulder in tweet. Plz RT!”. What's that? Well, we basically asked Boulderites to share what they love about Boulder with us via Twitter, and we think you’ll like their suggestions. If you haven’t been to Boulder, you’re missing something special. Even if you come for just a weekend, see some of the highlights: Saturday:Breakfast, Louisiana style: Lucille’s – Start with beignets, and some chicory coffee. Then go for something hearty like one of the egg dishes served with grits and a huge biscuit, (our favorite is the Eggs Jennifer for vegetarians!) or the sweet praline pancakes with fruit (warning, these are sweeeet!). Another place that received quite a few mentions is Centro located on West Pearl. Now, go discover the Pearl Street Mall a beautiful, brick-lined pedestrian mall surrounded by Flatiron views, plenty of shops and boutiques such as Into the Wind, The Savory Spice Shop, The Boulder Bookstore, The Pedestrian Shop, Powell’s Candy Shoppe and many more. The mall is the centerpiece of Boulder’s downtown, and a must-see!
Boulder Creek Path - rent a bike and cruise the creek path for a couple of hours. For convenience and a great bike rental, try Full Cycle or longtime local biz University Bicycles. Refresh and refuel at The Cup. Can’t beat free wireless internet, yummy home-made pastries, and organic, fair-trade coffee in a friendly atmosphere (and a plethora of of Apple laptops)!Don’t miss the West-End of Pearl, either. This area is popular with the locals. Beautiful shops such as the West End Gardener (777 Pearl St.) live here, and you can find unique gifts for anyone, but especially gardeners in this whimsical, lovely store. Grab a bottle of Australian, Italian or local wine from the West End Wine Shop next door. Oh, what the heck... go ahead and check out one of my favories on the other side of the terrace, Spruce Confections (767 Pearl St.). Stop in for delicious baked treats and coffee, or even soup and a sandwich. Ask about the famous Old B Cookie. (see their fun video) Free time? At some point, you must check out McGuckin Hardware Store. It isn’t downtown, yet it's not too far away, and should be seen! “More than a hardware store,” they’ve been locally-owned for over 50 years. It’s not your typical tourist destination, but it is a must-see local business that’s loaded with character and charm. You’ll be amazed at the variety of stuff sold here, and I promise there’s something for everyone. Take your dog! We takehttp://twitter.com/metro_dog (our mascot, Hagen) all the time and he loves the treats they give him! In any town there are hotels, and then there are... HOTELS. In Boulder, there are 3 particular ones that stand out, each with it's own character. The Hotel Boulderado, Boulder’s first luxury hotel - this one is timeless and elegant, and located right in the heart of downtown! Ask about the man-operated elevator - the oldest one west of the Mississippi! Also centrally-located is the St. Julien Hotel & Spa - the newest swanky hotel with luxury amenities, a full spa, and live music in their beautiful lobby most every evening. The Boulder Outlook is a zero-waste hotel. Not only is this place green, but even the pool (with a natural waterfall) is healthy and is not chlorinated! They use bromine, and the water is warm. Mmmmm, so relaxing!Dinner: A popular twitterer in Boulder, @cindykcruz, tweeted that one of her favorite restaurants is Radda, in North Boulder, which serves delicious Italian food with style. “I Love Radda 4 an excellent meal in a perfect neighborhood place 2 meet friends”, Cruz says. She's also not alone in highly recommending Mateo Restaurant, 1837 Pearl, for French Provencal delight. Your dinner (might just be) will be served by the owners themselves – talk about local! You might not realize it, but there's quite a list of options in the arts and entertainment category in Boulder. For night entertainment, you can't go wrong with the Boulder Theatre, The Fox Theatre, or one of the many clubs scattered around the Pearl St./Downtown area. In fact, if you haven't already made your dinner reservation elsewhere, an excellent choice for entertainment AND dining simultaneously is the Boulder Dinner Theater. Enjoy dinner and a musical and go home completely satisfied. In the daytime, visit the many galleries and museums around town, including BMoCA. We'll visit that one tomorrow... Sunday:Brunch at the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House... how to begin explaining this haven? There are many traits that this stunning spot offers that will fulfill your sensory needs. First, take a walk around the rose garden and take in the wonderful aroma. Next, treat your eyes to the architecture and the artistic decor inside. Back in 1987, Dushanbe presented Boulder with a Teahouse to celebrate the establishment of sister city ties. More than 40 artisans in several cities of Tajikistan created the decorative elements, including it's hand-carved and hand-painted ceiling, tables, stools, columns, and exterior ceramic panels. Impressed yet? You'll soon be seated with 2 menus and, as the name suggests, one is a long list of imported teas from around the world. Enjoy one of Boulder's best brunches! Afterwards, take a few steps over to BMoCA (Boulder's Museum of Contemporary Art). Enjoy the modern art and pick up something neat in the gift shop. Then, if you haven't already experienced the Boulder Creek Path (yesterday's recommended bike ride) now's your chance. Just a few yards away, across Central Park you can take a stroll on the path along the creek. Depending on your ambitions, you may eventually find yourself at Scott Carpenter Park, a favorite place for twitterer @boulderblogger to go and hang out. Hey, wait a minute. Scott Carpenter? Yep, that's right, the park is named after THE Scott Carpenter of NASA fame (not only Mork landed in Boulder). Scott was a Boulder native who named his space shuttle after the intersection where he grew up... Aurora and 7th! At this point on your tour of the smallest city with the most to offer, many of the locals will be screaming, "See the trails!" Our family's decision to move to Boulder was partly because of the ability to easily and quickly slip away from the hustle and bustle of the the city into pure nature, in just a matter of minutes. Because of the city's decision to maintain open space by creating a "green belt" around itself, you really can head any direction and find abundant nature easily. Twitterer, @fjkelly3, loves the Mesa Trail runs, while @bouldertweep recommends the stunning views at Chautauqua Park & up Flagstaff Mountain. More recommendations come from @OnlyInBoulder who loves the "shifting Flatiron views" and @boulderblogger who says she loves summiting Mt. Sanitas. We personally love that it takes us 10 minutes to get across town to arrive at our haven - the barn where we can feed and ride our horse into the many trails in Boulder County. As I head out to the barn, I can't help loving the metro/urban/nature mix of things.Speaking of grazing... where to go for lunch on Day 2? Visit one of many Thai restaurants or Indian/Nepalese buffets scattered around town - try the Musamun Curry dish at Khow Thai on Broadway, or if you haven't had enough of the Pearl Street Mall district, you've got anything from falafels and gyros at Falafel King, Italian cuisine and dessert at Trattoria On Pearl or some gourmet burgers, fries and freshly brewed beer at Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery (try the Mountain Sun Magic Rootbeer), just east of the mall... to name a few spots. Incidentally, Colorado offically has more micro-breweries than any other state. Here are a few of the things some of the locals wrote about the people of Boulder, which may be the real reason that people love and stay in this town and why many have left the big cities to live here: @cindykcruz loves the people and the plethora of exercise options, and @DaveTaylor 's favorite things are "the smart, concerned, entrepreneurial people. It's an Awesome community and kid friendly". It's "nicely eclectic" in the words of @boulderagent, a local realtor. Check out Pharmaca, a nationally-recognized Pharmacy/Healthy Alternative concept chain born out of Boulder. It's a good place to go if you forgot your meds on this trip... however, they also carry wonderful soaps, massage oils & gourmet chocolates - including none other than another famous Boulder company - Chocolove. Oh, and on the way there, don't forget to get A Bhakti Chai or Oolong tea at Atlas Purveyors on Pearl St. (between 15th and 16th). Finally, may I suggest some great places for dinner cuisine? Laudisio, which is located on the 29th Street Mall, makes their own fresh pasta and pizza dough daily, has a nice family-friendly feel that you don't always find in a gourmet restaurant of this caliber, and they also create their own fine selection of Italian desserts. In fact, they make small batches of gelatto to order (try the olive oil gelatto...)! Other fine dining choices are The Black Cat, a soulful bistro that prepares food straight from their farm., The Kitchen, a community bistro located in historic downtown, or a newer restaurant a couple doors down called SALT, who opened their doors just weeks ago and has already earned instant fame. Shazbat! That's quite a menu of items to eat, see and do. How could you possibly accomplish all that and so much more? Well, I forgot to tell you about "The Curse". You'll be back." Martha Stewart Crafts : DIY : Felt Fortune Cookie

Valentine's Day Idea ,I have recently visited martha stewart and saw this great DIY- I would LOVE to ahare this with you, be creative DIY with your family. 1. Using fabric shears, cut a 4 1/2-inch-diameter circle from a piece of felt. Cut a piece of matching ribbon slightly shorter than 4 1/2 inches. Using wire cutters, cut a piece of floral wire slightly shorter than the length of ribbon. 2. Using craft glue, affix the wire to the middle of the felt circle. Glue ribbon on top, covering the wire. Let dry 30 minutes. 3. Fold the felt circle in half, using the wire as a guide, so ribbon is inside cookie. Next, angle the sides toward each other, bending the wire at its halfway point and forming a fortune-cookie shape, as shown. 4. Assemble the fortune cookies. Carefully peel back one flap of the felt cookie, and insert a paper fortune and a few candies. Fold the flap back over to close cookie around contents. From Martha Stewart Living, February 2008

My Last Blog Post For The Year 2009

Hello To ALL My Friends & Family,This is the last blog post for the year 2009.
It has been an amazing year, and I have to thank you guys for all your support handmade, you comments and love that you gave me.I want to take this opportunity to thank you ALL for sharing your life, names, family ,ideas, through joyous occasions such as a birthdays, holidays, weddings and sharing a family's loss. In the last year, I created over 2000 necklaces and there is so many wonderful unique stories that my work allows me to share with my family and with you. But I would like to share with you three family story that made me cry and could not sleep for many night."You Completed Me Necklace"-"This is a gift for my mom. My father passed away in July. I saw this necklace and thought it would be appropriate. Even though they are apart, he will always be with her. Also, my daughter was born in May. So it is like she is a gift from heaven to help heal the hole in her. Thus the circle of life!"
The 2nd necklace - I got an order from a husband that wanted to buy a gift for his pregant wife.This is the e.mail that i got from the lady few weeks after the got the necklace"
"Sima~I am writing regarding the beautiful necklace that was made for me. My husband Geoff ordered this necklace for my birthday on 9/17. The necklace had two rectangle tags, one with my husband Geoff's name on it and the other with my unborn son's name (Parker) and a pearl. The necklace arrived on saturday the 13th of September. I was so excited! I was 35 weeks along and so excited to have my necklace!! The whole reason for the necklace was to have my boys close with me when I went back to work following my son's birth (he wasn't due until 10/19). On 9/14 we went into the emergency room and discovered that our unborn son Parker's heart had stopped. He was delivered, stillborn, on 9/15 at 7:15pm. His umbilical cord had hemmorhaged. A complete, tragic, fluke. I wore this necklace during the entire labor and delivery and have not taken it off since. This necklace now holds special meaning for my husband and I. I will cherish it forever. Thank you so much for the beautiful keepsake. ~RC~ Loving mother to her angel Parker GH." :I love you RC and i will always think of you,but the good news is that RC is pregant again{hugs to you my dear}
The 3rd order that I got this year was from a lady that wanted to create a keepsake necklaces for her husband and two kids. The jewelry turned out beautiful like never before.A week after, I got a phone call that the lady passed away from cancer. Thank You again & have a happy and healthy NEW YEAR~~~Sima

The New Jewelry Obsession – Personalized Silver Jewelry by Noa Levy on December 30, 2009 The new jewelry obsession taking over the streets of Tel-Aviv is personalized jewelry. After we all copied Carry Bradshwa’s oh-so-80’s gold necklace with our name hanging on our neck, it is time to take another fashionable step and introduce to you Sima Gilady’s personalized jewelry. Sima designs her personalized silver jewelry with a lot of love. “This isn’t just a job for me” she says, “it’s a great passion and blessing, to be able to be a part of a family’s story – even if just in that short moment of time.” Sima creates one-of-a-kind personalized jewelry according to her customers’ request, with a unique word in Hebrew or English to represent the person wearing the jewelry – it could be a name, a date, or simply a little word which holds an entire world inside it, such as “love”. Sima’s jewelry bracelets and necklaces are made of sterling silver, gold filled, 14k gold, copper, each jewelry design is unique and meaningful. Her inspiration comes from her family, the nature around her and songs she likes, as the “You Complete Me” necklace inspired by a beautiful Hebrew love song.

Do It All Mamas (& Papas)

By:December 17, 10:17 PMEarly Childhood Parenting ExaminerAngele Sionna
Sima and her family In today's Do It All Mamas (& Papas) the spotlight is on Sima Gilady, mommy to Leah (17), Maya (14), Yonatan (5) and Eden (3) and the designer of SimaG Jewelry. I have two of Sima's necklaces and they are beautiful. Among my very favorites to wear.
Read my review HERE. Examiner: Tell me something unique/interesting about yourself. Sima: I born and raised in Israel .I got married and moved to Boulder ,Colorado, then I started my career as esthetician, had 2 girls and had to close my shop due to hard time with my third pregnancy. I wanted to be home with my kids and be there when they come home from school.Art & Jewelry has been my passion in my life, since I was a child, I considered myself an artist. so staying home has been a blessing in many ways.I love my life, my kids and my husband who always supports my work and my dreams. I LOVE my job, and I believe it shows. I create my beautiful jewelry at my home while my 4 kids at school. After 3pm, I am my kids mother and my husband wife.
Examiner: What is your business all about? Sima: SPREADING YOUR LOVE ♥ ONE LETTER AT A TIME ♥ Personalized Jewelry In Hebrew & English. Some people wear their hearts on their sleeves. I prefer to wear mine around my neck.(http://www.simag.etsy.com/ and soon my very own website :) http://www.simagilady.com/)
Examiner: What is your favorite product that you make or sell and why do you like or recommend it? Sima: My very favorite product is my spiral shape necklace.Two years ago I create the first spiral design on Etsy. I stamped my family around the disc as a spiral, snail shape.Since I was a kids i always drew snails, took photos of shells and any thing that looks like a spiral is mine. I have to buy that. The spiral shape to me is: Journey... Balance Progress Direction Initiation Centering Expanding Awareness Connection Journeying Development. Family."The Human Mind Always Makes Progress,But It Is A Progress In Spirals."~Madame De Stael
Examiner: Why did you start your business? Sima: I wanted to find a great piece of jewelry to represent my family and found nothing that was "one of a kind." Then i bought my first stamp letters few years ago and created my family and friend a great keepsake. I love that every disc is unique in that you can personalize each tag, "every disc has a story".
Examiner: What secret do you have to share with other parents about "having it all" with your family and business? Sima: Creating jewelry and running my jewelry shop, I try to keep my life in balance by exercising and walking everyday. I try to volunteer at my kids school, to have a date with my husband and my big girls 17 and 14. It is very important to me to spend some time with them, while the little boys with their daddy.My family and I love traveling and exploring the world, it is very important to us to take time from work and busy life.
Examiner: What is the number one piece of advice you have for other parents? Sima: Enjoy your family, your spouse.your kids they grow too fast. Find the time to read to your kids,To hug them and say :"I love you" Keep your family priorities. To bake together.
Examiner: What is your (and your kids) favorite family activity? Sima: We live in in beautiful Colorado. We love the mountain, we hike in the summer. The girls water ski and we ski in the winter.
Examiner: Anything else you want to add? Sima: I LOVE MY WORK! I truly see each custom personalized design as my opportunity to share in the life of that family through joyous occasions such as a birthday or holiday or wedding and through their sadness in my pieces of remembrance in sharing a family's loss. I create every piece with love, one letter at a time - it's the ultimate personal experience for me. This isn't just a job for me, it's a great passion and blessing, to be able to be a part of a family's story - even if just in that short moment of time. I never forget a family's special request for a custom order and every time I duplicate that certain piece, I'm taken back to the wonderful unique stories that my work allows me to share with my community.
{Thank You so much "Angele Sionna" for featuring me in your website}

My Fave Chanukkah Gift --- By Bryce - www.theluxuryspot.com

Bryce Dec 12th, 2009
If you’re still looking for a Chanukkah gift, don’t worry, I got your back. Cute, delicate necklaces are all the rage for winter and spring 2010, which means all you have to do is find one that you can personalize.
I’ve been wearing my Sima Gilady sterling silver necklaces (I have 2) literally every day. I have one on an elegant and simple silver chain with a thin hammered silver disc pendant that says my son’s name, Benjamin, in Hebrew on one side and English on the other. But, if you don’t care for any Hebrew text, you can choose whatever text you want. Write your anniversary date, “Shmookie” for your dog, or some inside joke between you and your best friend. For $28, I seriously can’t think of a better gift. This is one of my Sima Gilady necklaces, and translates to “Binyamin” the Hebrew version of Benjamin, which means “son of my strengths.”
T H A N K YOU my dear . Bryce is a Manhattanite mom that can be found jet-setting off to every corner of the globe. She loves exotic places, trying adventurous cuisines, artisan fashions, and apothecary-type beauty products.

The Inner Me By My Daughter Leah

My daughter Leah is taking a photography class at school in level 4 black and white film in a dark room. THe school displayed this photo in the main office and she is sibmitting it in an art show. All her photos are done with an old film camera and she takes the time and develops each of her photos by hand. The Inner Me "I created this multiple image photo of my naked back and within in a photo of Israel to resemble who I really am. Although I was born and raised in Boulder, both my parents were not. My heritage is traced all the way across tho ocean to Israel where all our family is. We go back to visit at least once a year, twice if we are lucky and eventhough I was born here, I believe Israel is still home to me. I chose to make two photos for my self portrait because the smaller multiple image showed more detail of the city on my back. The bricks on the floor began on my lower back representing walking into the future and away from the past. All around me is dark because it is still the unknown in my life. The picture of the city is a walkway overlooking Israel as my future. The larger photo has less detail which I also like because it brings out the light in my back. The longer you look at the picture the more you begin to see. Once again it is a dark picture and alot of open space around me to leave room for my future. I love the pieces that I have created because it truely symbolizes me now, and who I will be in later years to come. The experience to develop my own film and photography opened a new creativity to me. It allows me to see things I wouldn't normally see through a lens and I definitely think the photos I make capture an image that means something to me. This is a place BACK home!" Leah Gilady,2009

Cool Mom Picks ----Tiny little circles of awesome

Tiny little circles of awesomeI'm the sort of person who is into the idea of personalized jewelry a lot more than the reality -- the reality usually being a little more twee and a lot more expensive than I like. But at SimaG Jewelry on Etsy, metalsmith Sima Gilady creates a wide array of simple yet beautiful customizable pieces that I can get behind.My favorite is the Circle of Joy necklace, pictured here. It's just 1" across, leaving me wondering how she manages the perfect stamped lettering. The result is my favorite sort of subtle effect; from a distance, it looks like just a pretty pendant, but up close, the swirl of lettering adds meaning. And if you're looking for that perfect affordable Bat Mitzvah gift, do not miss the gorgeous Listen pendant, something deserving of the "Judaica that isn't lame" category label if only we had one.Each piece is prettier than the last, and they're all available at prices mere mortals can afford. This is exactly why Etsy rocks. -Mir
